To Chief Joseph (1832-1904)

Joseph was 45 years old when he became chief of the Nez Percez's tribe. His name was In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat (Thunder coming up over the land from the water). In 1855, his father had signed a treaty that allowed his people to retain much of their traditional lands. Eight years later another treaty was created that seriously cut down on the amount of land. Joseph's father maintained that this second treaty was never agreed to by his people. Chief Joseph and his people after the fighting and the long marches were sent to a reservation that is now Oklahoma and were never permitted to see the land of their ancestors. Again...
