Story behind the song
The song is an easy going commentary on differences between the fast paced Eastern corridor and the Midwest. Tried to do it as a character driven song with some notable imagery. One connection is that Wichita's nickname is "Cowtown" and South Jersey has its own peculiar Cowtown--a part of the national rodeo circuit.
Lyrics
IN WICHITA By Steve Graff Wichita, in Wichita The dust rolls away and you?re opening your arms. Longhorns on trails or is it my mind playing tricks on me. I'm staring at the taillights on the interstate New Jersey. Wichita, in Wichita Your people tip their hats as they see me pass them by. Charlie he wishes he could make A river change course. Me I'd just be lucky to get down off this horse. REFRAIN Take us away with your dreams of the open range long gone back east where we keep close to the vest. Take us away 'cause New Jersey won't last long Cowtown's got a rodeo but those cowboys they move on. SOLO REFRAIN Wichita, in Wichita The men take their money and roll away to another town. Honky tonks are bustling but nobody's hustling just hunkering down slow-like and putting down some beers. Wichita, singing 'bout Wichita The dust rolls away and you?re opening your arms. Longhorns on trails or is it my mind playing tricks on me. I'm staring at the taillights on the interstate New Jersey.
