Story behind the song
This song can have multiple meanings lyrically. Is it relating to a political struggle? Victims of oppression daring to speak out, rise up.... or is it simply about how we're all affected by things that hold us back, a war fought in the mind? The choice is your's....
My writing started with the chorus here, which I knew would be anthemic. I started with Bob Dylan in mind, particuarly on the line 'Never follow the same old plan'...
It got trickier to keep that simplistic 1,4,5 chord feel in the verses. I knew a contrast was necessary. I went to the relative minor (apologies for muso-speak!) and found myself writing something more prog, more Marillion or Genesis. Synth pad, acoustic guitar, tension, tom-toms tuned a certain Phi Collins way...
I also found the contrast in textures: the industrial intro: people being dragged down, the daily grind....and then the smoothness of the verses, pre-chorus then an uplifting chorus. Surely there's something for everyone in this!!

Lyrics
It's a revolution without bloodshed,
A war fought in the mind
But it's just as dangerous
Once open not sure what you'll find
Freedom is what everyone is aching for
But something nobody gets near
It's all about seeing how close you can get
But being held back by fear
Dare to be different, you will be
Dare to be great and you can
Dare to be something other than them
Never follow the same old plan
Fear keeps everyone toeing the line
Stops them going the whole way
Pretty soon they'll get cold feet
Then once again they must obey
They will fear what they don't understand
Realise they no longer command
What they once held so dear in their hand
And it's slipping away like hourglass sand
