This song was actually recorded back in 1991, while serving time in jail. It is a culmination of several inmates stories, including my first time, living outta my car. But the time seem right for it's release, directly off recording done in jail.

Story behind the song
While doing a short stint in jail, (Liken to Merl Haggard), I composed this song from the first time I was homeless, after getting out and living in a place where another, burnt down the whole building, leaving me with absolutely nothing at that time. No home, no family, etc. and due to a combination of my wife being encouraged to leave me, as someone had told her, 'I would not be the same, loving husband, due to the prison envirerment when I got out?' She believed that at first ... and actually divorced me, w/me unable to do or say anything about it from inside the prison. She did finally realize, these people had ulterior motives for their advise to her. We did eventually re-marry. And NO! There wasn't any issue of violence involved. I was doing time for a minor, postal violation, I didn't know was against the law. But writting a book about abusive authority, was why I was rail-roaded, in an effort to simply discredit my book, should I finish it? I guess Law enforcement, were afraid I might be believed, less they did something to discredit me, before I finished the book? But the song, really revolves around the issues of today, as well. It is the actual recording from within the prison, done on an old beater guitar, thru a kids, cheap karaoke machines, cassette deck. Done in the Chaplin's office, I recorded 20 songs ... solo thru this cheap mic, to pickup my vocal and guitar only for copyright purposes. But now It's classic.
Lyrics
Verse 1 Got no address to give 'em down at the welfare line Out of prison the last two years ... but still doin time There was nothin left for me to go home to ... So I guess I just stop tryin, as I've done all I can do Verse 2 There's no tellin where my life is headed for ... And there ain't no easy livin, anymore And hand to mouth's, become a familiar way ... hey hey And I heard, there's still no rooms down at the mission again today Chores 1 But I've got this rusty old roof overhead with no windows to repair Got a steering wheel for decor and a milk-crate for a chair ... I've got an arm-rest for my pillow ... and a place to keep my comb Got an ashtray ... but no cigarettes ... In a backseat I call home (Short Instrumental Turn-Around Lead) I had no idea that life could be so cruel or that love is never offered ... to a fool And I don't believe that anyone really cared No one could ever understand ... unless one has been here Chores 2 Still got my radio ... but it's busted. Hell, it looks good anyway? Got a lever to hang my hat on ... but I lst mine yesterday I've got a hub-cap for a mirror ... but somebody stole my comb Still got an ashtray ... but no cigarettes ... in a backseat I call home
