Story behind the song
This song was a staple of the civil rights movement as well as the union movement, and other movements that have come since. Mostly I've recorded ballads here, but this kind of song has been much more common among the great social movements, which have all been very musical. This type of song has been sung by people striking against industry, boycotting buses, marching against war or staging sit-ins in factories, dean's offices, and half-way up ancient redwood trees. This particular song is what has been called a "zipper song," or a song structured such that new verses can be shouted out by someone in the crowd, and they don't even need to rhyme.
Lyrics
Author Unknown (chorus) We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved Just like a tree standing by the water We shall not be moved We'll build a mighty union, we shall not be moved ... We're black and white together... We're fighting for our freedom... We're fighting for our children...
