Story behind the song
This is a song Fred wrote about an old man that he met on one of his trips down to the Keys.
Lyrics
Old Conch Words: Fred Elkins & Charles MacConnach Music: Fred Elkins Verse 1 He was just an old conch from one of the keys Upper or lower Matacumbe Or Ligmunvitae, no one knew for sure Living on a sloop that was anchored off shore But now she's run aground, she doesn't sail anymore Now he spends his days in a young mans dream Chorus Oh-Oh what does it mean Oh-Oh what have your eyes seen Verse 2 He's seen so many tourists as they come and go Googends and digmes too many I knows He just shakes his head and waits for the tide He could carve a new keel or mend any net But modern times has left him just a little upset Now he spends his days living in a dream Repeat Chorus Verse 3 He still carries round a picture of Bess his wife He lost her in the hurricane of thirty five Or thirty six , he can't recall for sure The government has put a tourist park on his land The years and the beers have put a shake in his hand He don't really care, he's living in a dream Repeat Chorus Verse 4 He remembers when there wasn't a road on this key Now the cars stretch out as far as you can see Well he just shakes his head as they all pass by The locals they all think that he's a little bit strange Been out in the sun to long, a little deranged But he don't really care, he's living in a dream Repeat Chorus
