Story behind the song
There are actually two Red River Valleys, one in Texas and Oklahoma and the other in North Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba. Although the song is generally associated with cowboys in Texas, there is evidence that the song was popular in areas of North America. The song was based on the tune "In the Bright Mohawk Valley."
