Story behind the song
My mother raised three children all by herself after the divorce between herself and my dad. He was gone much of the time and always very distant. She did all she could to raise her kids on a little bit of nothing by doing secretarial work. We were never hungry, never knew we were poor, and never knew that others thought of us a ragamuffin children. We thought we were doing just fine on pinto beans, ground beef, chili, and sometimes a chicken or fish. Mom is a cancer survivor, my sister wasn't. Still, she did all she could to raise loving and respectable children.

NARRATIVE: HELLO, MOM, YEAH, THIS IS JOHN. HOW ARE YOU?
WELL, WE'RE JUST FINISHING UP HERE IN SALT LAKE CITY
AND THEN WE'RE GOING ON TO CHEYENNE FOR A WEEK OR SO.
WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE WE MIGHT GET A LITTLE TIME OFF
WHEN WE FINISH UP SO WE'RE THINKING THAT WE'D LIKE TO TRY
TO DROP DOWN THROUGH NEW MEXICO TO VISIT FOR A BIT
YEAH, YOU KNOW HOW IT IS ON THIS RODEO ROAD.
LISTEN, MOM, THE BAND IS WAITING FOR ME SO I HAVE TO GET GOING
YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU AND I MISS YOU. I JUST DON'T ALWAYS HAVE THE
TIME TO CALL YOU LIKE I'D LIKE TO.
WELL, I GOTTA GO. LOVE YOU MAMA. BYE
