Story behind the song
This is one of the few songs that I've ever originally written for somebody specific. Of course, the girl this was written about and I broke up a long time ago now so I suppose the song has taken a more broader meaning. The "clown review" refers to the ludicrousness of everyday life. I just got to thinking about how sometimes it seems like your entire day is just spent being judged on how much of a fool or clown you are, and you have to play that part just to get through it, just so at the end of the day you can finally be with the one(s) you love. It's kind of a sweet little love song. For the production I really wanted to capture something somewhat melancholy yet hopeful, kind of like a kid who picks flowers or whistles on an overcast day just to cheer himself up. The strings were played by a local Sacramento group called the Default Trio and the bass was done by Larry Tagg. I play all the rest of the instruments. I was kind of going for a Pet Sounds/Sgt. Pepper kind of vibe with this one, but I think it ended up with it's own unique sort of quality.
