Story behind the song
This traditional English folksong is thought to have derived from an earlier piece called The Nobleman's Wedding. As with many folk pieces, a number of versions exist, but the lyric here tells of a young girl's mistake in trusting a smooth talking lothario who has clearly disappeared from the scene. Despite his errant ways, she still seems to hold a candle for him.
