Story behind the song
Was sitting in church one day and the idea hit me about what memories a church might have about the people in the pews, their lives, families, values and faith.
Lyrics
I’m two hundred years old this week A house of God with a memory Lookin out my doors and down the hill At the little town by the old grist mill Everyone there’s been in my pews I know tales that never made the news ‘Bout saints and sinners, angels, thieves Things seen and heard underneath these eaves CHORUS Funerals, weddings, sorrows and joys Girls become women, men grow from boys Sadness, comfort, laughter and pain All things different yet ever the same I hear the prayers I feel the sighs I see the hurts they can’t disguise Lives so filled with trials and thrills Things seen and heard by the little church on the hill V.2 I’ve seen generations of Smiths and Lees Bless our town with generosity Watched anger kill all the Jones When Grandpa’s sins were finally known Billy hopes no one sees him dip in the plate Edna hides a heart filled with hate All their choices about God’s will Were seen and heard by the little church on the hill (CHORUS) BRIDGE Looking out my windows there are rows of monuments That remind them of life’s values for the ones who have the sense (CHORUS)
