Walter Garland and Joe Alford were members of The Collin Raye Band for many years and began writing songs on the tour bus and in hotel rooms. Story behind the song
This is the first song that Walter and I wrote. We got the idea while watching the O.J. Simpson trial.
Lyrics
“ I REST MY CASE “ Walter Garland Joe Alford VERSE 1 We signed the papers just today, stole a glance and looked away On the day we said “I Do” I thought you meant it too In a courtroom full of strangers you took back your name But through it all I still feel the same CHORUS 1 ‘Cause I’ve been tried and I’ve been true I’m still holding on to you I’ve been driven down to tears by a jury of my peers If my belief in this romance gives justice half a chance Then no one could take your place I rest my case VERSE 2 I had a chance to testify and I swore I would not lie That it broke my heart in two when I saw him holding you So tonight here in our bedroom I will make my last attempt I will lie in bed and hold you in contempt CHORUS 2 ‘Cause I’ve been tried and I’ve been true I’m still holding on to you I’ve been driven down to tears by a jury of my peers If my belief in this romance gives justice half a chance Then no one could take your place I rest my case BRIDGE Every time I close my eyes I find I’m still a witness to the crime CHORUS 3 ‘Cause I’ve been tried and I’ve been true I’m still holding on to you I’ve been driven down to tears by a jury of my peers If my belief in this romance gives justice half a chance Then no one could take your place I rest my case @1997
