Written for a dear friend, a deeply spiritual person. We dated a little, but she decided we weren't compatible because I reject all mysticism. Sad, but far enough. Over thirty years later, we're still friends.

Note about the "2025 Remixes." Since I don't currently have the resources to book studio time or musicians, I am polishing my old demos in Suno. I'm doing my best to keep Suno from making alterations to my compositions, and succeeding about two thirds of the time, but it is an uphill battle. For the sake of transparency, I am making an effort to delineate all of the (usually very slight) alterations Suno has made to the recordings, but it will take a while. In the meantime, once you've heard a "remix" to hear how I want the song to sound, you may want to scroll down to the original demo, which, in a few cases, will be a better representation of how the song _goes_. Until I've finished those notes, I can tell you that "Loafy's Blues," "Misfit Moon," "It Does Not Mean a Thing," "Home," "Saturn Road," "The Skin of Our Teeth," "Old Friends Come Back," "Scarecrow," and all the instrumentals are pretty much perfect reproductions of my original compositions. I'll endeavor to make notes on the others, describing precisely how they were altered. And again, you can hear my original, much less slick demos of those songs further down on the page, for comparison. ====== I am what you might call a musical generalist. I listen to pretty much everything and I compose in pretty much any style, though I concentrate mainly on folk, folk-rock, rock, synth-pop, alternative, comedy, musical theatre, jazz, new-age, film music, avant-garde, and the occasional lullaby (why sing your kid to sleep with "Rock-a-bye Baby" when you can can create something personalized?). I've done most of my professional (i.e. paid) work in the theatre, where I've been musical director for dozens of productions. I was also musical director of Mental Floss, the legendary Miami improv group, for over 500 performances; I recently did a stint with Laughing Gas, which rose from the ashes of Mental Floss 11 years ago to become the longest running improv group in South Florida. As a singer-songwriter, I've concentrated most of my energy on my signature style of synth-driven folk-rock (sort of Indigo Girls meets Vangelis). I'm also something of a minor celebrity in the world of Filk (folk music for science fiction fans), where I am proud to be the object of the worlds smallest international fan base.

Story behind the song
Remixed in Suno. An almost perfectly accurate recreation of my original demo. The AI voice does mispronounce "cocoon" as "coo-coon" at one point, and slightly alters the phrasing of a couple of lines, but otherwise, this is the song precisely as written.
Lyrics
[Verse 1] Mary says you know what day it is Today it all goes up in smoke I've been counting the signs, I've been reading the leaves And I think it's time for the cosmic joke [Chorus] 'Cause the sun is eclipsed And Saturn's in Mars And I've been talking to that lady who's the psychic to the stars and she Says cash in your stocks, it's coming soon But there's time for one more dance under a misfit moon [bridge] I say you're crazy, she says it's a matter of time But time is an illusion and reality a state of mind And you think your hallucinations are realer than mine [Chorus] Well, I've been counting the signs and reading the leaves And I'm keeping the faith, though it's hard to believe The sky is falling, oh well, you know the tune But there's time for one more dance, under a misfit moon [Verse 2] Mary says, you don't know my name She says, I went and had it changed I say I always liked Mary ok, so shoot me She says Mary's fine, but it didn't suit me [Chorus] Mary's fine, but it's a Christian name And I've outgrown those childhood games She says, I'm born again, not a day too soon So come and celebrate under a misfit moon [Bridge] I say, you're crazy, she says, I was crazy before Now I'm just out of my mind, I think it shows that I'm becoming mature Got my feet in the clouds, my head planted solidly on the floor [Chorus] Well, I've been in this cocoon Waiting for change And I went a little crazy with the growing pains But I taught the voices in my head to sing in tune So come and celebrate under a misfit moon I taught the voices in my head to sing in tune So come and celebrate under a misfit moon
