New band name for my one man band. The ancient form of my first name.
My name is Holger Luth. I was about 15 years old, when I got my first guitar. Actually it belonged to an older friend, but the never played it, so he let me borrow it. I had been taking piano lessons earlier, but I hated it. The most fun I had with the piano, was to create my own little tunes. i was no good at repetitive rehearsing. It has been the same with my guitar playing. Many of my guitar playing friends, spent hours rehearsing technical stuff. I never had the patience for that, I just did what I thought sounded right. My mind was more directed towards songwriting, than towards being the guitar hero, though I did like to play neverending live solos, long enough to make the bass player make puking sounds and the drummer start throwing sticks at me... I played in both small and larger bands with up to 8-9 people, with violins, flutes and lots of other instruments, but I think my best time in a band, was playing in a three piece. It was in the aftermath of Police, British New Wave, the Danish Punk scene, Danish songwriters like C.V. Jorgensen and many more. You had to invent a lot of new "big" chords, in order to create a bigger sound, being the only guitarist ( and lead singer). Later I started listening a lot to bands like U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and most of all Peter Gabriel. Peter is like my guiding star. I have had the luck of seeing him in concert a couple of times in the recent years and even if he has gained a few pounds and is called "Papa Bear" by his bass player, he can still sing better than anyone I know. His voice is directly wired to his heart, it's like every word has its' own set of wings and flies out of his mouth, carrying an important message. Wish I could get anywhere near that! My musical taste has developed over the years and I try out a lot of different genres, out of curiosity and because I get inspired by other musicians, here on SC and by other friends in music. I have 3 sons, that are all engaged in music somehow and they have also inspired me a lot. They have a totally different take on the term "Musician", than I have and I find it inspiring and I am amazed at the multifaceted way they can tackle the tasks of a songwriter, producer and musician. I must admit, that my music sounds a little old fashioned compared to music of today, but what the heck.. I am from 1957, I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Bob Dylan.. need I say more?

Story behind the song
I tried for a long time to get all the nice sounds I could hear from a guitar tuned to an open D-chord into a song, but I never felt so good about it as I did with this song :) I came to think, that the lyrics have a relationship with the old standard "Smile": "Smile through your pain and sorrow, smile and maybe tomorrow, you'll see the sun come shining through, if you just smile.." That is the feeling I am trying to capture in "My Book".
Lyrics
I feel like a jigsaw puzzle, when looking back at my life. The pieces were put together, but maybe not the right way. I can recall a thousand faces, that I used to wear, through the ages. The sum of all the fears and the sum of all the fun, added together to make me who I am. The good and the bad, the happy, the sad, all of this is written down in my book. The chances I took, the wrong turns that I made. The good luck that made my stupid moves look good. The hard work that I did, that was totally misunderstood. There are bits and pieces of my time, all worn under this old hat. It’s been beaten up and worn out, but it’s still going strong. Now it has stayed on the path for a while, though pushed aside by stronger winds. Somehow I learned to love it, this crazy, scattered life that is mine. The good and the bad, the happy, the sad, all of this is written down in my book. The chances I took, the wrong turns that I made. The good luck that made my stupid moves look good. The hard work that I did, that was totally misunderstood. (Oh-oh) My victories were few, short lived and overlooked, but they will live forever, in my book. The good and the bad, the happy, the sad, all of this is written down in my book.... (Oh-oh)

Wonderful song, great lyrics. The "oh oh" ending is fantastic, lifting the emotion and the song into an anthem, and neatly book-ending the track with the intro. Superbly crafted and recorded. Well done. A joy to listen to.

Very nice indeed Holger. Beautifully put together. The acoustic guitar sounds especially nice. As always, your vocals and lyrics are fabulous. This sounds so very, very polished and professionally recorded. I listen to a lot of Swedish bands, and your voice is similar to that of Roine Stolt (Flower Kings, Agents Of Mercy and Kaipa De Capo) on this recording. Oh wow...this is great Holger...David

This is a good melodic song full of deep sense related with the whole life experience which often has a very different character (as a rule), and this is neither good nor bad - or both good and bad in the same charge - but just some wide palette of the whole life's colors. Soft and heartfelt vocal tunes and intonations, nice accompaniment of the group with its harmonies and acoustic timbres, the whole sound is excellent. Well done.

Brilliant song Holger, hits the spot on every level. Outstanding lyrics - expertly crafted, beautiful melody. A song with a meaning that will resonate within many people. You have managed to capture the idea that our lives often seem so random and chaotic...and yet there is a real purpose and achievement underlying it all. Awesome!
