Story behind the song
The departure of Roy Keane Ireland's Captain from the Squad for the 2002 World Cup convulsed the Irish nation. Half the Country balmed Roy for this debacle and the other half blamed his manager Mick McCarthy. Speculation about an apology and his possible return to the side persisted for weeks. In the end he never returned. The music is the "Wreck of the Old 97" which itself is a reworking of an earlier tune called "The ship that never returned". The Kingston Trio had a version in 1959 called "Charlie and the MTA" and this has always been a favourite of mine
Lyrics
The Man Who Never Returned I Now let me tell you the story ‘bout a boy named Roy On a tragic and fateful day He was summoned to a meeting to clear the air And found himself on his way Chorus And did he ever return No he never returned And we were all so concerned (Poor Roy) Now he’ll live forever in the Irish psyche As the man who never returned II When Captain Roy met Captain Fantastic They didn’t see eye to eye And what wasn’t said wasn’t worth saying As the sparks began to fly III Back in Ireland, there was consternation How could we survive without Roy? And we couldn’t even carry on a conversation Without talking about our boy Chorus IV Tommy Gorman thought he had a solution And he put Roy before our eyes But no matter how many ways he tried to ask him Roy just couldn’t apologise V We called for the Taoiseach , we called for the Pope We called for Kofi Annan He said he love to help but he was very busy With India and Pakistan Chorus VI So who was right and who was mistaken? Did you get to have your say? Just remember, when you loose the head There is always a price to pay Final Chorus And did he ever return No he never returned Were there any lessons learned? Now he’ll live forever in the Irish psyche As the man who never returned He’s the man who never returned He’s the man who never returned
