Story behind the song
This song is the description of how I was feeling being in New York after September 11th. Sometimes you need to be brave and say things first before anyone can tell you they feel the same way.
Lyrics
I want to leave New York. Someone get me out of here. I want the green pastures. I want midnight on the pier. I've got my bags all packed, Called myself a taxi cab, And once I'm past the city line I'll have no wounds despite the scabs. There's no reason to delay Except the midnight cabarets, But that's no incentive for me to stay. I really love the city, But I've never cared for Broadway. And after a year of tragedy, I still see doomsday on display. I'm going to buy a car and drive down good ol' highway 55, And the first town I find a friend Is the town I'll spend the rest of my life. There's no reason to delay, Except I really want to stay, But how can I do that when I'm so afraid. I see courage in their eyes And faith in a way I can't describe, And that is the way I want to live my life. I want to leave, But I think I'll be hanging on And not give in to cowardice. Join the human race where I belong. I know I'll have my doubts That will make me want to stray, But in the end I know That this is where I'm going to stay.
