Story behind the song
PFC Tom Bounds was stationed in Iraq and his father, Jim, retold stories about Tom and inspired this song.
Lyrics
As I stood at the kitchen window, when Tom was a little man
I watched him play toy soldiers in his big box filled with sand.
If he noticed I was watchin’, at attention he would stand
He’d raise his hand up to his brow, “bout face he would command.”
Today my mind remembers, how I loved to watch him play
Now, my heart reminds me that he’d be a man someday.
If he noticed I was watchin’, at attention he would stand
He’d raise his hand up to his brow, “bout face he would command.”
Soldiers in the sandbox, just pretend to little boys
Army tanks and Army guns were plastic games and toys
Freedom was the sandbox where he played when he was young.
Now, the sandbox he’s protecting is the freedom for his son.
As I watched him board the “Red Eye” to fly off into the night.
I heard him through the darkness, “Let’s do this job up right.”
Now, he shares the sandbox with real Army tanks and guns
And every soldier has a name, one is Tom, my son.
Chorus
My mind still remembers how I loved to watch him play.
But, now my heart reminds me, he’s off to war today.
Soldiers in a sandbox, heroes in the sand.
Fighting for our freedom, willing to take a stand.
Chorus
