Story behind the song
song to the lyrics "Life's a Funny Proposition After All" by George M. Cohan
Lyrics
If you think you are beaten, then you are! If you'd like to win, but think you can't, it's almost a cinch you won't; for out in the world we find success begins with a fellow's whim! It's all in the state of mind! If you think you're outclassed, you are! you've got to think high to rise; you've got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize! Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man; but sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can! Hour after hour the cards were fairly dealt, but still I got no hand! Life is a game dealt from unseen sources. Oh, blind are our efforts to control the forces that go unseen, are a little less strongly felt; and through the long, long night I play what I get until the break of day; I would be true, I would be pure, for there are those who care, and I would be as strong, for there is much to suffer! I would be brave for there is much to dare; I would be friend of all the foe, the friendless; I would be giving, and forget the gift! yes, forget the gift. Yes, forget the gift! I would be humble, for I know my weakness! I would look up, and learn, and love, and lift. To be honest, to be kind, and earn a little, and to spend a little less; To make upon the whole of family a happier for his presence to renounce; though today may be a day of smiles, tomorrow's still in doubt, yes, still in doubt. And what brings me joy may bring you care and woe; we're born to die but don't know why or what it's all about; and the more we try to learn the less we know; Life's a very funny proposition, a very funny proposition you can bet; and no one ever saw the problem properly as yet. Properly, as yet. Young for a day, then old and grey, like the rose that buds and blooms, and fades and falls away! Losing health to gain our wealth, as through this dream we tour; Everything's a guess and nothing's absolutely sure; oh no; Battles exciting, and fates where fighting until the curtain falls; life's a very funny proposition after all!
