One of those beautiful traditional American songs pulled up from the well by Bascom Lamar Lunsford in North Carolina in the 1920s. The Suck Tones here as a southern old time string band. This one's for Lou, Grant & Michel, the railroad men.

Michael Hughes, Auburn, Maine. Original acoustic & electric music.
I worked as a musician for about ten years after I finished my BA in English lit, which didn't sound nearly as interesting at the time as playing music. After an enjoyable but wasted youth of bands, solo & studio work, ten thousand nights in clubs & lots of touring, three albums with David Mallett, and a few years as a music journalist and free lance editor, I saw the writing on the wall. I said goodbye to all that & began teaching high school English & started building my project studio. It seems like I've been interested in recording music since I began playing the guitar back in grade school. From a cheap portable cassette tape recorder up through four track cassette "portastudios" and then reel-to-reel rigs to my first encounter with digital recording around 2000, I've always enjoyed trying to lay down sound. Some of the music up on my page was recorded on my first digital system (a Roland VS-1680), and some was recorded on my current system. So, as much as anything else, I'm interested in the art & science of making good sounding recordings. I write original music and do arrangements of music from a variety of sources. I'm trying to get at an emotional vibe and that elusive buzz with each recording, a core that I hope comes through in the sound of the instruments & the way I play.

"A railroad man will kill you if he can,and drink up(of?) your blood like wine" Like ,what the hell must've happened to ole Bascom to make him write a lyric like that. Thanks for salvaging this song. Once again it prompted me to find out just who Bascom Lamar Lunsford is/was. I always love music in the genre of "Edutainment". And one conclusion I've found is there is no music spookier than Appalachian . It makes death metal sound like nursery rhymes. There's some good video footage on Youtube of dudes playing that give me the chills. Even your version sounds like something one might sing while cleaning up the crime scene after permanently shutting up that loudmouth neighbor. And THAT, my friend,is a compliment of the highest degree. Well done,Michael.
Michael, I never even tried to play the Banjo, because I heard performance of Old time music by friends in Wisconsin very long ago. Well at that point I simply decided to quit because I knew I will never be able to manage this instrument. Same here: Great performance, holds true for all instruments here, also including the voice. Hey don´t be shy and hide you voice, bring it up front? I mean Mole in the Ground is a pretty strong message, right? Outstanding, special work and I´m back to thinking how I can talk you into collabbing on a tune with us! :) Andreas

Hi Michael... I'm pretty stingy with the "five star" ratings...but this track deserves it. Excellent playing...truly authentic "back hills" sensibilities...and clear production values. A real winner, here. Not my more normal listening fare...(genre-wise)...but I appreciate anything that is really well done...when I hear it. Kudos to you...sir. Hugs...Mike (NAV)

A fine example of your multi talents. I'm starting to expect that everything you record is going to be great and can't wait to hear the new lap steel. -Mike (FGP)
