Story behind the song
This piece was originally put together in the early 90's (on 8 trk cassette) from 3 separate cassette recordings: -1985 "free music" duet, mostly Steve Peckman on sax with me doing live Echoplex treatment and a small amount of synth and percussion -1985 spontaneous duet with Dan Bartlett (my band mate from 'You and Me') and I playing wooden slit drums -early 90's solo piece of mine (synths and digital sound modules), mostly improvised, my own patch programming and emphasis on real-time control of parameters and mods. While mixing in the slit drum recording, I manipulated the tape speed and rode the faders, essentially 'playing' that tape as an instrument. Other than that, these 3 recordings were basically just superimposed, they were not edited together to make them 'work', as I often like to experiment with coincidence and synchronicity. To this combination I also added some digital percussion, played in real time. This year I adopted this piece as a dadala piece since it was already in that spirit, and did a small amount of editing in spots to tighten it up, reducing it's length by about a minute. Still a little on the long side, as often happened with improvised stuff I/we did.
