What does it take to become a creative musician with a passion for God? A difficult childhood, a broken marriage, a bankrupt business—and a sheltering church, a godly woman, and the willingness to come to the end of yourself and tell God, “Whatever it takes.” After his construction business fell apart in 1999, John Davidson began to break in his relationship to God. Three years later he began attending River of God Church in Byron Center, Michigan, and joined the worship team, playing trumpet and percussion.Eventually he began having visions of God’s love, grace, and mercy in specific memories of hurt. In January 2006 the pastor preached a series on 40 days of God’s presence. John accepted the challenge to give up the most precious thing—for him, Detroit Pistons basketball—and spend that time (6 hours a week) getting to know God in a deeper way. Three weeks later, while praying and meditating on God’s Word, he began asking God for more and was inspired to write the song “More of You.” He began writing one or two songs a month, birthed out of his intimate time with God. He started piano lessons to help him write. He composed more than 30 songs from January 2006 to November 2007.
John was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1960. He holds a degree in theology and religious education from Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. He and his wife, Clare, have two children, Mark (17) and Rachael (15). John teaches a men’s class, and Clare teaches Sunday school

40 days without Pistons basketball????

It was January of 2006 and our Pastor gave a 40 day challenge to us. What is the most important thing that you would give up for 40 days and instead spend that time pursuing God with all your heart. As I contemplated this it dawned on me the most important thing to me was Pistons basketball. I said yeah, I'll give that up for 40 days. This freed up about 6 hours a week. So I put my whole heart into pursuing God. I got into the Psalms and really sought an intimate relationship with the Lord. About three weeks latter I was telling God how much I wanted Him, and penned my first song "More of You". This exciting journey soon became 30 songs and the release of my first cd "More of You." Sometimes we hold onto things thinking we cannot live without them. Even good things. There is nothing wrong with sports, our work, activities or whatever. It is when we put them ahead of pursuing a relationship with God. When we do that we find ourselves like the prodical son, we feed on the corn husks and find ourselves filled but not satisfied. May God bless you as you passionately pursue Him. John
