Normally, when beginning a new tune, either mine or an arrangement, I play the melody on my guitars, eventually adding some bass notes and flourish, until I have a good feel for the piece, then I take it to the keyboard and continue to work on the arrangement.

I also very much enjoy Michael Manring's fretless bass pieces, and so I play some fretless bass in a few of my compositions. Some of my pieces are a little more composed, others are largely improvised.
