Lyrics
Before we leave the safety of the movie theatre, I make my friend pause as I unhook my car keys from my purse. I place the key, ever so intentionally between my middle and forefinger As we walk through the dimly lit parking garage. She seems carefree, just yappin away about the movie I am only actively listening as I am constantly surveying our surroundings. Making sure the shadows are actually just shadows And the footsteps are just echoes of our own. I wonder why she doesn’t do the same. We reach the car, climb inside, lock the doors and are on our way. We don’t discuss my watch dog behavior. When we get back to my house, we chat in the cold, hug, and I hurry up the steps. Before I open the door, she calls to me, “Hey, watch me get in my car.” She tells me, embarrassed, “Oh, it’s just a thing I have.” I know what this thing is. It’s the same thing that makes us check our girlfriends get inside the house safely. But I thought it was odd that I was watching her. Even odder still, that we are both in our 20s and are too shy too acknowledge this thing. I tell my brother about the experience and he calls it: The Buddy System. For me, the buddy system was having a partner you stood next to in line at school. Making sure both friends did their homework. Making sure you call them at night to remind them it’s “Show and Tell” the next day. No, that thing she has, The thing that makes women hold their drinks with their palms over the mouths at parties The thing that makes us add another pound to our purse because we carry a tazer That THING that says every two minutes, someone in the US is sexually assaulted. And that 44% of the victims are under 18. I call that thing The Rape Mindset. And for my brother, it just doesn’t sound PC enough. Maybe if I knew some way to wrap pillows, and daisies, and clouds around the word RAPE it wouldn’t sound as bad So far, I haven’t found something that won’t be pierced by four simple letters. We are not overreacting. We are not living in fear. What good is it to only “Take back the night?” When there is still dawn, morning, and dusk? Rape is not just a feminist issue.
