Story behind the song
I dedicated this song to my cousin Desi who is brave beyond measure. She is currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia. All proceeds from this song will go to her family to help pay for hotel costs. She will be in the hospital for 80 days when she gets the bone marrow transplant from her brother. She has three wonderful children, the oldest 19, the youngest 14. Everytime I went to visit her, she always had an open home and heart. She always helped me with my own children when I saw her, I appreciated that more than she will know. I remember a time when I visited, my kids were 1, 3, and 6, and I was exhausted trying to keep up with them while traveling. Desi took us all to the playground and kept an eye on my 1-year-old while I pretended the park bench was desert island. This song was written from the perspective of a child, I thought of Desi who helps children grow their own wings with all her love and kindness.
It’s not much, but I wanted to do something to help. So maybe this is more about me than her. A little while back my oldest son was fascinated with butterflies and he was wearing a pair of pretend wings. His brother thought it rather fun to stomp on the wings. “Stop steppin’ on my wings!”, my oldest wailed. I started to hum a tune and I raced to the computer to start writing the song. I finally finished the words and put it together. Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for all your heavenly inspiration, you are always in my heart.
