This is the Fourth Movement of my bluegrass work called 'Poker Flat'. It is about the bygone days of the small town of Lackey, Kentucky. 'Poker Flat' contains five movements in all.

Story behind the song
What motivated me for this music piece was the stories told to me by my father-in-law, Franklin D.R. Horne. Franklin lead a remarkable life in the hills of eastern Kentucky. He grew up during the time when everyone worked at the coal mine and everyone was paid script instead of actual cash. Times were difficult, but everyone helped each other. Franklin grew up in a wooden house on stilts that overlooked Beaver Creek in Lackey, Kentucky. He was one of nine children. One of his older brothers named Kaman Kaman Horne, died at the age of seven shortly after telling his mother that he felt like he was going home. Franklin and his other siblings played in the majestic hills. It was an age of poverty, coal mine dangers, God-fearing religion, moonshine, bluegrass, and community. It was the way of life, and I have attempted to preserve the fading memories of that bygone time in my music piece "Poker Flat". The music piece title refers to the patch of dirt down by the branching of the left fork and right fork of Beaver Creek, which was behind the house where Franklin grew up. This patch of land was called Poker Flat because many men would gather there to gamble (away from the watchful eyes of the authorities.) I asked Franklin to name my musical tribute to Lackey, Kentucky, and he chose the name "Poker Flat".
