Jim McDonald is a whiskey-drinking, squirrel shooting hill billy harp player from the foothills of the east Kansas Ozarks who, until recently, was an unknown harmonica treasure hidden away in the hills.
Discovered by our mutual friend, Paul Lee from New Yawk, Sarge soon caught on to recording and made his wonderful music available to all of us. As his unofficial wav converter, I had the opportunity to collect a fair batch of Sarge's best tunes. It is my honor and great pleasure to be able to share them on this page.
Jim's the real deal; a player steeped in rhythms and styles of traditional country barn dance music, he learned his instrument and his repertoire from his father and has carried on a uniquely pure style of playing country music. He's a one-man band on the harp, creating complex rhythms and melody lines from simple songs and weaving a rich texture of sound. He makes it sound easy but as a fair to middling harp player myself, I can tell you this guy's got moves the rest of us can only wish we had. Just listening to one of his tunes is a lesson in rhythm control and melody mastery!
So crack open the Jim Beam, put on your dancing shoes and enjoy--this is good stuff!
