Story behind the song
My uncles served in the World War and Korean battle zones and most of my cousins and brothers were also overseas in places such as Korea and Vietnam. We need to remember to thank all of the people who risked their lives for our freedom.
Lyrics
The Greatest Test of Me. Copr Doug Buche, 2010 all rights reserved. First Verse: I was swinging on the porch with Grandpa today, when one of his friends came by. They started talking about their military history; Grandpa said did you used to fly. The other man said, very gratefully, yes I did I'm glad you asked. The wife doesn't like me to talk about it; she says I spend too much time in the past. Chorus: But those were good times, good times, the best times of my life, I wasn't even married yet, I just had met my wife. I was living hard and fighting hard for my country. By God it was the greatest test of me. Second Verse: When we went back inside the living room, I saw a picture of Grandpa on the wall. He was dressed in a military uniform, standing straight and tall. I asked him if he flew a plane in the war, he said no I was stuck in the mud, I really don't like to talk about it, you see, it's just because, I saw a lot of blood. Modified Chorus: But those were bad times, bad times, the worst times of my life. I never knew when I might die. I missed my kids and my wife, but I was living hard and fighting hard for my country. By God it was the greatest test of me. Third Verse: When I looked over at my grandpa again, there was a tear falling from his eye. I knew in my heart he was hero, and he was not afraid to cry. Then I walked over to grandpa, gave him the biggest hug I could. I saluted him and said thank you sir, for your past life and for doing what you should, Final Modified Chorus: and for the good times, good times, the best times of my life, for the opportunity that came my way from your sacrifice, for your living hard and fighting hard for our country. By God it was the greatest gift to me. By God it was the greatest gift to me.
