A 40th birthday song for my wife
Artist picture
Internationally recognized, prize-winning lyricist well-versed in cabaret, indie, folk, country, showtunes and several other genres.
I am the Grand Prize Winner of the 2007 International Songwriting Competition for my collaboration with Eduard Glumov, "I'm Not Your Friend." We also won First Prize in the Rock/Alt Division of the Great American Song Contest. One judge called it a prime example of "world-class songwriting" and said the images in the were "often stunning." I'm a lyricist and have been collaborating with musicians from California to Kazakhstan, over the Internet. The fruits of that collaboration are found here, and at . While the winning song was a hot funk-rock song, with a compact streamlined lyric, I write in several styles. I've chosen "indie" as my genre, but I write anything from cabaret to country, and am looking to work with musicians and composers of all stripes. Currently I'm finding writing partners here in my home town of Philadelphia.

Story behind the song
This was a 40th birthday present for my wife. Midsummer occurs on June 21, not too far away from her birthday. I wanted to write a song about being at a midpoint, not an end. There are a lot of personal references, of course, but I hope it still works as a general song. The one essential reference is that we met when working on a production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (and there are a few quotes from her character, Hermia, in the lyric). I'm indebted to Ian Ferrin, who took my melody and chords and played the accompaniment. I'm afraid that's me singing, with a pretty bad microphone.
Lyrics
(Verse 1a) When school is finally out We get into our cars and head off Into the sunset Days of questions Troubling and unsett(ling) Wondering what it’s all about? (Verse 1b) But it’s only Midsummer The longest day of the year Spring is a season of want (Of) awakening and possibility When a dish of chicken picante (Could) stand as an edict in destiny When a stint in the city (Was a) time of growth and dreams and scandal Birthday cakes had fewer candles Now you’re older (And) you’ve got more answers (Than) you can handle (Chorus) But it’s only Midsummer (And the) hottest days are still ahead (Verse 2a) Now, every lengthening day Leaves you feeling never so weary Never so in woe Ruts and routines Fireworks have been so (distant) Wondering why they went away (Chorus) But it’s only Midsummer (And the) hottest days are still ahead (Bridge) You can count the fireflies As they blaze and disappear You can’t even start to count Your future souvenirs Spring is behind us It’s only halfway through the year (Verse 3a) I only dream when awake I watch you and I am amazed (And) know not what to say Solving riddles All the dragons you slay (always) Wondering how much you can take? (Verse 3b) But it’s only Midsummer The longest day of the year So the days will grow short (The) apprentice will become the mentor I am pleased to report Middle children always find the center So we’ll raise the children Watch them fly off insecurely Face our future years unsurely We’ll have memories But let’s not have them Prematurely (Chorus) But it’s only Midsummer (And the) hottest days are still ahead And that’s not all (Cause) I’ll still be here in the fall…
