Story behind the song
- About The Waste Land concept The Waste Land is a musical, visual and literary concept album, about the experience of annihilation and the end of the world. Through the story of a nameless, partially amnesic and un-heroic character, told by himself, The Waste Land shows the critical crossing of the tattered world after its catastrophic ending. Guided through the devastated lands by a fragmented, hollow and formless shape (the character), we are watching the unavoidable collapse of a fallen society and the hard rebuilding of a lost humanity on a heap of broken images. On the road leading the wandering character to his possible redemption—at least to the understanding of this inexpressible and unspeakable quest—ashen landscapes, snatches of subdued memories and sickly hallucinations intermingle and break the frontiers of space, time and reason up, until he expires. To give life to this post-modern story, in the post-apocalyptic tradition of literature, visual arts and cinema, we tried to create a special relation between music, mixing, images and words. We therefore collaborated with various artists who transposed Hord’s score and lyrics in their work: Jochem Jacobs (producer) ; Jakob Arevarn (director, designer) ; David Lundmark (photographer) ; Paer Olofsson (graphic designer) ; David Sandberg (model) ; Colin Vauthier (logo, layout). The Waste Land is the hybrid result of this human and artistic experience. - About the song "Epidemic" "Epidemic" is the first song of the chapter 2 of the album: A Heap of Broken Images Thanks to “life-flashing-before-his-eyes”, the character gradually discovers and shows us the origin of the seeming death of civilisation, the whys and wherefores everything is completely destroyed. A succession of tragical events precipitated the extinction of humanity : pandemic, violence, wars … it seems that the world didn’t survive the dangerous law of survival instinct.
Lyrics
"The town crier : Partisan of wait-and-see or mental masturbation / Humanity has reached the point of no return / Years of abuses / We went too far / We crossed the limits but the worse is yet to come / We can’t reverse now / We can’t stop the spread of evil / It’s time to … Fall! Who’ll be the next to contract the virus? / Fall! Epidemic is rising and threatening us with a gun on our temple / Fall! It’s time to be judged! / Fall ! We’re just germ carriers! / Fall! Delighting self-destruction ! The harder we fall … We went too far away / Helpless to ease the pain / Virus-infected cells / Benighted crowds, tons of people collapsing Infected / Helpless to ease the fate Headlines : Pandemic phase declared / State of crisis / Alarm systems overheating / Panic-stricken people wondering who’s infected Cities gripped by violence / Human tolerance explodes / Media and governments overtaken by events renounce / We can’t stop the spread of evil / It’s time to … Fall! Who’ll be the next to die cuz of the virus? / Fall! Epidemic is here now and killing us in thousands every seconds / Fall! It’s time to be judged! / Fall ! We’re just germ carriers! / Fall! Delighting self-destruction ! / The harder we fall … We went too far away / Helpless to ease the pain / Virus-infected cells / Benighted crowds, tons of people collapsing / Infected / Helpless to ease the fate / We give ourselves away beneath the weight of misery / The final judgement is near Enlightened towns fall into decline and ruin / This is the end of humanity …"
