Tha Full Bio
Rokk Rilla is a long time artist/producer, and Bay Area native. As an accomplished pop-lock dancer and DJ, his roots to Hip Hop go all the way back to the days of the B-Boy. Rokk started his musical career in the South Bay city of San Jose at a small independent label called Stone Records. As an artist and in-house producer for Stone, Rokk?s peers and label mates included a young and now famed producer named Fred Wreck Farid Nasser (West Side Connection, Britney Spears) and Anne Williams aka Debbie Deb (I?m Searching, Cries in The Dark). Though Stone Records offered much promise, Rokk?s relationship with the label was short-lived. Always insightful, his vision for his career and the direction he believed Stone to be headed did not agree, so he left the label, a decision that proved wise. Shortly after Rokk?s departure, Stone Records went out of business. Attracted towards the idea of having his own crew, Rokk networked and formed the group Trybol Phunkk. For the next several years, Rokk worked tirelessly to perfect the Trybol Phunkk persona as well as his lyrical and production skills, all the while surviving a slew of bad business deals and industry con men. Though Trybol Phunkk proved to be an invaluable asset to the development of Rokk?s career, after seven years, multiple group-member changes and a need to express his individualism, Rokk disbanded the group and set out to reestablish a solo career.
Rokk hooked up with artist manager Chaz Hayes (E-40, Spice 1), but having taken to hustling to finance his musical endeavors and with his focus now on the day-to-day hustle of the streets, there was little that Chaz could do for him, so it was not long before Rokk found himself again without management.
An extremist, Rokk took to the life of a hustler with a passion and quickly gained wealth and street credit. However, these rewards were not without their price. After developing a drug habit and almost a decade of terrorizing the streets of San Jose, the city called in its marker and sent Rokk to prison. Rokk passed his time in prison by writing music and reading. One book in particular, Dr. Na?im Akbar?s Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery, would be the catalyst in Rokk defining the man he aspired to be. Proud of the accomplishments of Hip Hop yet disappointed in the decline in the quality of music, equipped with a message he believed long forgotten and a desire to return Rap music to the quality of old, upon his release from prison Rokk built a recording studio and went about the business of creating the music he loves.
In an industry where the profitability of a product is king to the quality of the product and the marketability of an artist is more important than the talent of the artist, Rokk Rolla truly stands alone on his own square. With influences ranging from Quincy Jones to Michael Jackson and Rakim, Rokk Rilla is a throwback to the days of the Musician, Showman and true MC.
