Story behind the song
This song was written shortly after the Tiananmen Square Massacre in June of 1989. I was deeply touched by the beautiful idealism and commitment of the students, the support and hope of the adults. I, with the rest of the world, wept at the violence that followed. I believe in the dream of the students, of all people who dare to use their voice, who earn to embrace a greater reality and freedom for themselves and others. However, I wrote this song more for the dreamers, themselves, than for the actual dream, because I knew the blame would be placed on them. I knew many survivors would accept that blame, because that's what survivors often do. But they weren't wrong for dreaming or making a stand for that dream, and even if it wasn't time for that dream to come to manifestation back then, it is my hope and my belief the dream still lives as long as we keep it safe, unfettered with hatred and regrets, in our hearts... ...for there are many ways for life to give birth to itself.
