CARL VON WEBER WAS IN DECLINING HEALTH WHEN HE WAS COMMISSIONED HIS FINAL OPERA, 'OBERON - THE ELF KING'S OATH'. THE OPERA WAS A DISMAL FAILURE, BUT THE OVERTURE, WHICH DEPICTS FAIRY TALES OF ELFLANDS AND SPIRITS IN MUSICAL COLORS, WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Hello and welcome! "Symphonic Band Performances" is a compilation of recordings from several high school and college bands that I played in including the TMEA (Texas) All State Band, the TMEA Region X All Region Band, the Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp, the Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, the USAF Golden West Band, and recordings from my h.s. band, Beaumont H.S. and a few band recordings that were passed down to me. Also included are various All State groups and college and university bands. I participated and played in the large majority of these recordings. There are no professional recordings here and every recording is Public Domain. Most are available for free download. Each song has been converted from the original analog or digital source and edited with Audacity or Dak software. In the majority of these recordings, I play the tenor sax or alto sax, b flat or e flat clarinet, or directing. I was drum major for 2 years in high school, I have a BA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I studied music ed, composition and theory. I had about 500 more recordings I was planning to digitize and upload, but this past Nov. 20th, my home was completely destroyed by fire, and all the contents, including all my music and instruments. So, this is it. Please feel free to post a comment here or on my member page. If you like, please become a fan by clicking "I'm a fan" below.

Story behind the song
This is performed by the 504th Air Force Golden Gate Band at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The Commander/Conductor of the Air Force Golden Gate Band was Major Roger W. Sebby. The Commander/Conductor of the United States Air Force Band was Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel. Overture to Oberon Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) Weber conducted the premiere of his opera Oberon in London on April 12, 1826, three days after completing the score. Although he composed music for all genres—symphonies, concertos, chamber music and operas, Carl Maria von Weber is probably best remembered for his overtures to three operas: Der Freishutz, Euryanthe and Oberon. The most important and successful of his seven operas was Freischutz, which in turn led to a commission for Oberon. Oberon is a fairy tale, very loosely connected to Shakespeare, and has all of the trappings of the genre—a despondent king, elves, and knights in shining armor. It was commissioned for and premiered in London’s Covent Gardens, and first conducted by the composer himself, who was to die from Tuberculosis shortly after the premiere. The Overture is particularly captivating, and paints a vivid picture of the action on stage. Weber’s sense of orchestration and his use of the instruments to create a wide pallet of musical colors were revolutionary. The overture’s opening French horn calls, muted strings and flute/clarinet flourishes immediately suggest a fairy tale setting. Later, ferocious string writing (a triumphant escape) followed by a very beautiful clarinet melody (love), describe perfectly the moods and character of the story. Weber was an early romantic, and his use of melody, harmony and drama helped create a framework for future German romantic operas. His influence went even beyond the German border to inspire the great French masters Berlioz and Debussy.
