Hi, my name is Julie Chow, and I am a singer-songwriter who is currently based in San Francisco, California. I have released four self-produced albums: When Desires Collide (in 2001), The Stars Shine Bright Tonight (in 2002), Momentarily Disreplaced (in 2003) and Wheel of Fortune (Narcissus & the Echo) (2004). Story behind the song
Best Friend" is a mixture of a lot of things. Some would think of it as a message to a friend, a kind of unhappiness surrounding their obligation to leave. Others could also imply that it is a song inspired by another friend who's feelings were unrequited. The song comprises of both, then mishmashes the meaning to make the message not quite one or the other. The bottom line is that we've all had best friends - ones who have been so close to us, we can tell them everything and nothing in between. But what happens then? What happens when you know someone so well, interacting with them is awkward? Essentially, "Best Friend" is about having a best friend and then losing one. It's about realizing differences and then wondering what would have happened had those differences been disregarded. In many ways, it's the kind of song that makes a big deal out of nothing. But on the other hand, if it was nothing, then it wouldn't have meant something...and that isn't what "Best Friend" is about.
