Contemporary band compositions, classical music arrangements, marches, jazz, symphonies, overtures. A collection from bands that I have played in throughout hi
Hello and welcome! "Symphonic Band Performances" is a compilation of recordings from several high school and college bands that I played in including the TMEA (Texas) All State Band, the TMEA Region X All Region Band, the Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp, the Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, the USAF Golden West Band, and recordings from my h.s. band, Beaumont H.S. and a few band recordings that were passed down to me. Also included are various All State groups and college and university bands. I participated and played in the large majority of these recordings. There are no professional recordings here and every recording is Public Domain. Most are available for free download. Each song has been converted from the original analog or digital source and edited with Audacity or Dak software. In the majority of these recordings, I play the tenor sax or alto sax, b flat or e flat clarinet, or directing. I was drum major for 2 years in high school, I have a BA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I studied music ed, composition and theory. I had about 500 more recordings I was planning to digitize and upload, but this past Nov. 20th, my home was completely destroyed by fire, and all the contents, including all my music and instruments. So, this is it. Please feel free to post a comment here or on my member page. If you like, please become a fan by clicking "I'm a fan" below.

Story behind the song
NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, COMPOSED THIS MILITARISTIC CONCERTO FOR TROMBONE IN 1877. I- ALLEGRO VIVACE, II- ANDANTE CANTABILE, III- ALLEGRO. PERFORMED BY THE WHEATON COLLEGE BAND NEAR CHICAGO, FEATURING DOUGLAS YEO, NOW THE BASS TROMBONIST FOR THE BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Notes from the soloist, Mr. Yeo, "When I auditioned for colleges while in high school, the Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto was my primary audition solo. I entered Indiana University (studying with Keith Brown) and transferred to Wheaton College (near Chicago) where I studied with Edward Kleinhammer. It was the custom of the Wheaton College Concert Band and Orchestra to tour during one week of our Christmas vacation and during our spring break. I went on four such tours with Wheaton groups, covering territory in the mid-west and east coast of the United States. As part of these concerts, a student soloist usually performed a concerto and I was chosen to play the Rimsky-Korsakov on the Wheaton Concert Band tour. The tour was seven days long and I played the Concerto each night; it was the first time I had been a soloist with a large ensemble that required me to give multiple successive performances of the same work. That same spring the Concert Band gave its annual spring concert in Edman Memorial Chapel at Wheaton College and I performed the work one more time, this time for the microphone as well. When I look back on that performance, I am horrified that I took so much of the piece "up an octave." That was the custom at the time; in fact it unfortunately remains the custom today despite the fact that Rimsky-Korsakov did not write the piece that way. Today, when I perform the piece, I play it as Rimsky-Korsakov wrote it and I regularly rail against those who tamper so severely with music as did I. I suppose there is something to be said for growing up and learning a few things along the road. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun playing the Concerto and the performance brings back many wonderful memories." Wheaton, College in Wheaton, Illinois near Chicago, is an academically rigorous, four-year Christian liberal arts college and graduate school, that emphasizes and has an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Wheaton prepares music students in four major areas – performance, composition, teaching, and scholarship – offering six Bachelor of Music degrees. Of all the great Russian nationalist composers of the latter part of the 19th century, Nikolai Andreievich Rimsky-Korsakoff (March 18, 1844 - June 21, 1908) stands second only to Mili Balakirev in his practical influence on the music created and preserved in that period. In so far as his own music is concerned, while some pieces have remained immensely popular, the bulk of his achievement is rarely heard today. Many people see him as the logical link between Modest Mussorgsky and Igor Stravinsky. Many of his works have been transcribed for concert band and are available on my SC page.
