Story behind the song
Friday was a late start due to carousing Thursday night, but the Allstars under the leadership of Mike Curtis laid down this track with Bill House and Paul Cummins handling rhythm guitar, tj gerencser on organ. Mike handles harp, guitar, bass and vocals. Scott Durfinger stretches out a lazy wah solo followed by Matt on solo guitar. John Cohmer lays down 2 solos finishing up with his trademark slide. Bob Huston finishes the song on Solo 5 with all the other players joining in at the end for the "Train Wreck"!
Story Behind the Song
"This is a true story, except for the parts I made up". Some has happened to me personally, more or less. Others happened to people I know - more or less. Which ones? Well, I ain't sayin'.
When writing songs, I take a certain degree of artistic liberty, to rhyme, to achieve a certain rhythm and feel, and basically to make the song better. I'm a poet and songwriter, not a newspaper journalist.
I originally wrote this as a kind of jazzy delta blues. While in the studio in Nashville for this session, a whim struck, and I came up with this arrangement, using several tracks of harmonica as a "horn section" of sorts (I often play harmonica as part of a horn section.). A lot of folks don't believe a band can have more than one harmonica player, which is not true IF they know what they're doing and how to work in such an environment. Of course, if they're just mindlessly jamming away, it often gets cacophonous - just as it would if horns were tooting mindlessly and purposelessly. But with a little direction, there's no reason it can't work.

ONE HAND IN MY POCKET

(This one's a true story, except for the parts that I made up)
Well I paid all my taxes, just like they say
But the taxman goofed up, he come and took all my stuff away
And now he tells me, I ain't gettin' none of it back
Well, they got one hand in my pocket while the other one twists the knife in my back
I worked twenty years, in the fac'try makin jeans
But you know they laid us all off, 'cause they got some fancy new machines
Didn't even give us two weeks notice, before the final whack
You know they got one hand in my pocket while the other one twists the knife in my back
My woman left me, she took up with another man
She said baby with no job you can't support me,
but Doctor Bill he sure can ah - by the way,
we're gonna need you to pay child support and all that ooohhh,
they got one hand in my pocket while the other one twists the knife in my back
Well I go to visit my kids, they're actin' mighty strange
They said Mama said you might molest us,
I said HEY! WHEN DID I CHANGE?
You know I always been good to ya, I ain't never done nothin' like that
Well you know that evil woman got one hand in my pocket, while the other one twists the knife in my back
Well you wonder why I got the blues, it ain't too hard to see
That this mean ol' world just keeps gettin' the best of me
Ev'ry time I'm back up on my feet, it knocks me down with a smack
Well they got one hand in my pocket while the other one twists the knife in my back
Well they got one hand in my pocket while the other one twists the knife in my back Ooohhh
