I wrote this for my pastor's wife who passed away with cancer in 2004.
Tom Petty meets Lifehouse...
My name is Andrew Shook. I write Christian songs and love for you to give them a listen!
Story behind the song
Here's one I've been working on for the last couple years actually. It is about my former (he is now retired) pastor's wife who passed away after her second battle with cancer in 2004. She was such a dear lady to me and so many other people. I started writing this the day of her funeral. I wrote the first verse or so and couldn't really write anymore, so I put it down and didn't come back to it for probably a year. Then I worked on it a little more and put it back down for a while. I finished it up late last year and recorded it Saturday. This one is definately special to me. Hope you like it.
In the last verse the line says, "The last thing she said to me, was someday I'll hear you sing". I had started playing and singing in a Christian band at the time and we had played a couple times at our church. She was pretty sick at the time and hadn't got to be there to hear us. The last time I saw her in the hospital, I was leaving and she called me over and gave a big hug and said "One of these days, I'm gonna get to hear you sing, boy." I thought it would have been a lot sooner, but, yes one day we'll sing together again.
Lyrics
I think I knew an angel once
I never saw her wings
I knew she was an angel though
When I heard her sing
She taught me about heaven
Our glorious home on high
Oh, how she longed to be there
In that sweet by and by
I think I knew an angel once
I never saw her wings
I think I knew an angel once
She didn't need no wings
Just a simple smile and a hug
Could lift me from anything
Always said "good morning"
To let you know she cared
She never lost her spirit
Even when she lost her hair
I think I knew an angel once
She didn't need no wings
When I think about her
It always makes me smile
And the things she left me
Will have last just for a while
The angel has left us now
She finally got her wings
The last thing she said to me
Was someday I'll hear you sing
Oh, how I long to see her
And join with the angel band
Then we'll sing forever
In that promised land
Yes, I knew an angel
Yes, I knew an angel
Yes, I knew an angel
Yes, I knew an angel
