Story behind the song

The idea was to create an intimate yet emotionally naked piece that emulates the post orgasmic experience, or afterglow as people like to call it, and the dizzying tingle that accompanies it. My compositional contribution was finishing the chords through the middle section after the drums kick in. Cooke and Willcox had got as far as F# to A major, then I had to find the way back to the original key. The first things recorded were the drums and bass for the mid section. Then we recorded Willcox acoustic guitar, which was miked up and fed through a Leslie cabinet. The spin-rate of the cabinet was controlled by co-producer Michael Carpenter in real time. We returned to the song over the course of the next few weeks to add / remove different instrumental parts. The freak-out section that incorporates the final verse and chorus was much more severe to begin with, and ultimately a lot of the things that appeared there were mixed well back for the final edit. The main instrument that covers this section is a midi hurdy-gurdy. Not knowing much about this instrument, how many strings it might have etc Carpenter and I decided to play the keyboard standing side by side, so you are hearing four hands at work. Other instruments used in this section include backwards piano, backwards eight string bass, electric guitar and midi glockenspiel.
