Story behind the song
In a brief period, four of my heroes died - Johnny Cash, Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt and Rick Danko (of The Band) and this song was the result of my melancholy about change and the passing of an era in music and in my life.
Lyrics
The ghosts of Tin Pan Alley have hired a sailing ship; plan to navigate through Panama and dock on Sunset Strip There they’ll take on passengers for a final sunset cruise with rocking chairs reserved for rock‘n’roll & rhythm ‘n’ blues The radio won’t say a thing; it’s forgotten how to sing, and seems to only know a couple tunes……… I sure miss the glory days; Jambalaya, Purple Haze, Blue Sky, Brown-Eyed Girl, Spanish Moon Radio, you faded way too soon When the clubs close down in Nashville; spirits haunt the night, in the windows of the Ryman can be seen the faintest light Tourists never hear the chain-gang rattle symphony; from the mountains to the Delta, country sounds the same to me I was cataloging 45’s when I heard the news that the Werewolf of London had just died Pancho and Lefty have gone with Crazy Chester, to join The Man In Black for a final ride Digital variety is yours for a small download fee, but you can’t call in and request a tune Radio, you faded………………….I look pretty good but I’m just backdated, Radio, you faded way too soon
