Lyrics

Darkest of night With the moon shining bright There's a set goin' strong Lotta things goin' on The man of the hour Has an air of great power The dudes have envied him for so long (Chorus) Oooh, Superfly You're gonna make your fortune by and by But if you lose, don't ask no questions why The only game you know is Do or Die Ah-ha-ha Hard to understand What a hell of a man This cat of the slum Had a mind, wasn't dumb But a weakness was shown 'Cause his hustle was wrong His mind was his own But the man lived alone Chorus The game he plays he plays for keeps Hustlin' times and ghetto streets Tryin' ta get over Woo, Superfly The aim of his role Was to move a lot of blow Ask him his dream What does it mean? He woudn't know "Can't be like the rest" Is the most he'll confess But the time's running out And there's no happiness Chorus Superfly

Wonderfully amoral blaxploitation semi-classic. It is about the most unlikely hero: a pimp/drug dealer (Ron O'Neal) with a 'heart of gold'. Our 'hero' wants to score one more time and retire for good. But circumstances beyond his control interfere with the pimp's dream of a happy life. Of course, the poor pimp is dammed from the get go, but director Parks makes sure that the viewer does not have time to stop and think; he does not want you to know that he is forcing the audience to root for the bad guy. Here the law is the enemy, and the street misfits are victims. Despite an obvious low-budget, the film is quite stylish. It was energetically filmed on location and the real setting adds something vital to the overall effect of the film. O'Neal is quite convincing in the leading role. At times, it is a bit hard to believe that he is an actor playing a part because he convinces you that he is the real thing. It's a powerfully effective performance. Like any other blaxploitation movie, the film never escapes its own paradox. It brings attention to a vital element of the urban life while accentuating the already detestable stereotype. A bit dated around the edges, but still a lot of fun if you forget that you have been manipulated all along.
