Story behind the song
May "celebrates" Christmas 1914, the first of the war, missing Ron feeling lonely and imagining him to be with her at home. At the front there is a remarkable occurance, an unofficial cease-fire, and men from both sides walk out into no-mans-land. The lads meet their enemy counterparts and exchange small items drinks, cigars etc., and photographs are taken. As the day progresses a football match develops during which the men of both sides find each other to be ordinary and just like themselves.
Lyrics
Christmas Day 1914 May: I am over here alone And you are over there It seems so far between us Ron, Its more than I can bear How I wish that you and I could be Together over here Ron: This Christmas morning is so quiet No shots been fired for hours Last night the Germans sang to us Carols across the wire Stille Nacht was so peaceful May So we sang them some of ours May: Christmas is a special time And you are in my heart I feel so very lonely Ron While we are miles apart But I can feel you here with me And you are in my heart Ron: This morning something strange occured Both magical and grand As if by some agreement We met the enemy and shook hands Then we played a game of football May In the mud of no-mans-land

You've really captured that Christmas in a simple song Neil. Very well done, with just enough pathos and sadness in the lyrics. Nice saxophone in the backgroung too. Is that a real sax or from a Roland 'synth' guitar ? The 'avatars' for your songs are all haunting images and very appropriate. Very well thought out, top marks Neil.

Hi Neil - great song!..........Life is sacred.....war is wrong........we need to find another way.......John left his mark on this world in more ways than one, but will probably be best remembered, in years to come, for using his popularity to put across a genuine message of peace. This song so reminds me of that. I wish you well in your endeavours. pete

Beautifully done song Neil, You know your history well, WWI was a family squabble gone insanely wrong in Sarajevo that day.. Those soldiers didn't hate each other .. yet. No one wanted what happened, no one ever won that war. You tell the story well. PEACE!

'Christmas day' is a poignant and beautifully written memoir of another era. And with the festive season approaching it makes us stop and remember those who have come before us, those who lost their lives for a better world, and still the world is fighting... It's a sad reflection of humanity, captured for all time by a songwriter's empathy and talent.
