The Ballad of Mary Ellis

Rough demo. This is a true story about a local NJ legend.
Welcome to my page! I hope you like it here. I’ve been writing songs on and off for the past 30 years. I tend to write country although I'm known to write songs that are more folk or rock. Sometimes when I sit down with a guitar I surprise myself with what comes out!

Story behind the song
I was always intrigued by her story, so I thought she deserved to have a song written about her.
Lyrics
The Ballad of Mary Ellis copyright 2007 by Gina Gibbins Way back in 1790 Mary Ellis came to town She lived with her family by the Raritan River A new life she had found One day a charming young captain Won over her heart and then He sailed down the river and out to the sea Said he’d come back, and they’d be wed Yes he’d come back, and they’d be wed (Chorus) And the lonely tears that she cried Rolled down her cheeks every day But the river flowed on with a silent song While down by the water she’d wait She bought some farmland near the shore To oversee his return Day after day she kept vigil But each day it only got worse For fourteen more years she waited for him Until the day she died They buried her on her farmland Family members by her side Family members by her side And the lonely tears that she cried Rolled down her cheeks every day But the river flowed on with a silent song While down by the water she’d wait Time moved on and swallowed the land That Mary called her home They paved over the farmland Yet they left Mary’s grave alone She still lies where she was buried Adrift in a concrete sea She waits for her captain til this day Where she waits for eternity Yes she waits for eternity And the lonely tears that she cries Roll down her cheeks every day And the river flows on with a silent song While down by the water she waits Yes down by the water she waits
