Story behind the song
Froberger was a court organist and a friend of Emperor Ferdinand III in Vienna. After the death of the Emperor in 1657 Froberger paid his tribute by writing this moving Lamentation (in a form of a French tombeaux), full of passionate emotion, sorrow and grief. The piece, however, ends in an optimistic way, with a rising F major chord symbolizing the Emperor's soul going to heaven.
