Story behind the song
I’ve always said that if you date me, you’re friends with me, or we’re related then you’re fair game, ha! I get my inspiration for songs where I see it. This song was about a good friend of mine who had the boyfriend from hell. The song is pretty self explanatory. We’ve all had destructive people in our lives (boyfriends, girlfriends, family members, best friends) that we can’t bear to leave behind because we feel like we can help them, change them, put them on the road to recovery. But more times than not, those individuals end up dragging us right down with them because, like the song says, “it’s lonely at the bottom”. This song has a really cool poppy rock vibe to it that none of my other songs really had up ‘til then. I had a really fun time writing it and I felt like out of all the newer stuff that I was writing at the time, this song really set the standard for the direction of the new album. We had a lot of great titles on this project, but this song and this title just summed up the album ’s overall feel/theme, therefore, becoming the title track.
Lyrics
Lonely At The Bottom (R. Williams/K. Copeland/D. Wells) You fix my car, you pay the rent You’re right on time with whatever it takes To keep me close when I feel strong enough to fly away Chorus You keep down ‘Cause you’re too afraid to stand On your own two feet and I don’t want to leave you Down But I finally figured out That you’ll always keep me down ‘Cause you’re lonely at the bottomLonely at the bottom You’re always right there when I fall Just to watch me hit and welcome me To pain of where you are, ‘cause that’s how you love me Yeah, that’s how you love me Chorus I’m fighting for my life And I know what I’m worth So I’ve gotta try Even if it hurts And I’m so tired Lord, I’m so tired Of you keeping me down ‘Cause you’re too afraid to stand On your own two feet and I don’t want to leave you Down but if I don’t leave now Then you’ll always keep me down ‘Cause you’re lonely at the bottom So lonely at the bottom
