ICM (Island City Monsters) is one of the most formidable hip-hop groups ever assembled. Composed of an all-star line-up of MCs, DJs, graffiti writers and producers,
ICM is quickly changing the face of hip-hop as we know it.
Before ICM was created, there were dozens of hip-hop artists in Montreal, all working independently towards a common goal: TO BE HEARD. Finally, a small collection of artists got together and decided to assemble a team consisting of the best performers the city had to offer. This team was carefully selected to include Offsides, Eye 2 Eye, Memo & Meta4ce. The DJ squad was made up of DJs Twitch, Mana, Fat Sak, and D.R. One.
Once this collective was formed, each party began to carefully plan their respective projects under one umbrella. This level of organization has allowed ICM to realize their
vision, and operate as an independent enterprise. The group has now established their own label, ICM Records, Inc., under which each artist will release their individual projects and group ventures.
The “Holiday Fever Mix CD”, scheduled for release in April of 2004, will be the first product to feature material from every member of ICM. It is what some are calling the unofficial ICM album, or perhaps just a taste of what is yet to come.
Offsides have been enjoying great success during the past two years. They were finalist for the 2003 BIG BREAK contest run by the CBC, and earned a spot on the nationally distributed compilation. Rapper Malicious was crowned as the Quebec Freestyle Champion after battling his way to the top on the Musiqueplus television network. D.R. One currently holds the title as Montreal Underground’s DJ Champion. The group just completed their first video for the single “2-Def” off their forthcoming album Foul Language.
Eye 2 Eye has won the hearts of fans worldwide for their famous theatrical rap concept. Their website has allowed them to reach an international audience who wait anxiously for every new song or video clip to be posted. They were named “Best Hip-Hop Act” by the Montreal Mirror’s Reader’s Poll for 2003, and are set to release their first 12” vinyl for the single “Thought Boxin’” featuring former world champion boxer Otis Grant.
Memo & Meta4ce are also preparing new material for upcoming releases, as is DJ Mana who won the 2003 Montreal DMC DJ contest. His next project will be an EP titled “City Limits” to be released on ICM Records. Apart from music production at his studio, DJ Twitch is currently promoting his latest Mix CD “Got What It Takes”. DJ Fat Sak’s full-spectrum approach to music has taken him from club DJ, to hip-hop beat-maker to producer of scores & soundtracks for television & film.
With this much talent and dedication, ICM is determined to make a serious impact on the Canadian music scene.
