The Road to Emmaus Well I’m going to try and tell you so that you can understand What it was like to follow Jesus, when he walked the Promised Land There was joy everywhere and expectation too They said he was the Messiah there was nothing he couldn’t do He could walk on water. He could raise the dead And crowds came to listen to every word he said We were on our way and we didn’t have a care We were followers of Jesus. We would follow anywhere Chorus But on the Road to Emmaus We thought that all was lost The preacher that we followed had died on the cross We were close to despair And beyond consolation And thoughts of resurrection Were beyond our contemplation We were joined on our journey by a man we thought we knew He asked us why we were sad, was there anything he could do We told him about Jesus, who had died on the cross And we explained that we were sad, 'cause we thought that all was lost He told us many things and that it had been ordained That before he entered glory, the Christ would suffer pain And later that evening, as he blessed and broke the bread It was only then we realised he was no longer dead On the road to Emmaus We knew we were ahead The preacher that we followed had risen from the dead He had banished despair And he brought us consolation And with his death and resurrection He gained our salvation So on your road to Emmaus When you think that all is lost Just remember Jesus Who died on the cross He can banish despair He can bring you consolation And with his death and resurrection He gained our salvation
