Story behind the song
Musically this sone was influenced by 'Falls To Climb' by REM. A band I'm a huge fan of. I really wanted to write a song with minimal guitar work and to try and convince myself that I'm at least a semi-competent keyboard player! All of the strings in this song were recorded as I wrote the song so when it came to recording the album I didn't have a clue what I'd played so it was literally a copy and paste job. The bass and acoustic guitar was added in later. We spent an hour during the 'Bethany' sessions just getting Esme to get the vocal melody right. Oh happy days.....
Lyrics
something's missing and it feels like you the rising panic I've misplaced you is only becasue you're not here (it's not you) anyone gone go long would raise from me a sigh so dont think it's because i want you back that makes me cry (it's not you) time stretches memories as we grow older still you carry the death of our love on your shoulders i know i have cast away all that you treasure what once was mine to hold turned me inside out and left me cold unexpected your face in the crowd disconnected i close the door i'm not porud (it's not you) how i've tried to push the thought away from my mind away from me and down the receeding tracks of railway line and those lives once to tied, so side by side cant go back every rose has it's thorn but you knew this all along so go on Cowboy, sing your song it was me who was wrong out of us two something's missing but it's not you
