Story behind the song
Well, as a young fresh faced brakeman,I had heard of the legend of engineman Nick Beeson, and by God,one day I finally had the pleasure to work with him,and every RIGHT ON word of his RIGHT ON reputation proved to be RIGHT ON true. This is the first song I ever made up while actually working on a train. Nick looked over on one occasion and asked me,"What the hell are you writing?" "A letter to my mom", I replied. To this day I still carry on his tradition,as do many other Jasper railroaders. There are fewer finer feelings in life than the anticipation during the drive home from work ,singing a freshly made up song out loud so you don't forget the key or melody, until you can grab your instrument of choice and flesh it out...
Lyrics
For years on the rails I've grinned and beared Many flirts with catastrophe While working with hogheads who have scared The BeJesus out of me. From Sideswipe Stan to Drawbar Dan Ron Run the Red and Pull Apart Paul, But there's one hoghead who has instead Made the shitty trips worth it all... Well he's Quick Nick the engineman Running that train with a throttlin' hand Jamming it to the eighth notch and we're gone. He's our favourite engineer 'cause when that C.T.C. says clear Through the engine's whine you can hear him shout, "Right on!" We got a ninety nine thousand ton one unit drag And the dispatcher is on the rag And that wanker wants to put us in the hole And make us wait. Well that don't go over too well with Nick so he gets on that radio quick And smiles and says,"I'm a-gonna set that bitch straight." 'cause I'm Quick Nick the engineman Running that train with a throttlin' hand Jamming it to the eighth notch and we're gone He's our favourite engineer 'cause when that C.T.C. says clear Through the engine's whine you can hear him shout, "Right on!" He's got a wrinkley face and a twinkley eye And when he gets on that coffee high He'll laugh and spit and joke each time he speaks Well it might sound funny but I swear it's true When he tells a railroad story or two I wanna go sit on his lap and pinch his rusty old cheeks. 'cause he's Quick Nick the engineman Running that train with a throttlin' hand Jamming it to the eighth notch and we're gone He's our favourite engineer 'cause when that C.T.C. says clear Through the engine's whine you can hear him shout, "Right on!" He laughs and waves to everyone We pass and sometimes just for fun He'll speed a little bit ,but he never gets caught He even makes those uphill climbs Go by as fast as stink .Sometimes I wish he was my dad but I'm glad he's not. He's just Quick Nick the engineman Running that train with a throttlin' hand Jamming it to the eighth notch and we're gone He's our favourite engineer 'cause when that C.T.C. says clear Through the engine's whine you can hear him shout, "Right on!"

I remember working with Mr. Bieson. Him and Bill McLaughlin were the best at getting paid by the mile. Oh man...

Lou, this is one for the ages, man. Great song--with great vocal performance, too--about a great man--the lyrics rival anything ever written about working the railroad, and that's putting you right up there with The Grateful Dead's Casey Jones and Utah Phillips' Going Away. Woot! Blown away! Right on!
