Story behind the song
In writing You Were Gone, I experienced the closest to real feelings I've ever had from a fictional situation. Thw worst nightmare of my life.
Lyrics
Last night I hugged your pillow As I laid awake in the t-shirt you’d worn earlier that day. My hand clenched the guitar pick, You had held when you sat at the foot of our bed as you played. I could hear the chords of summertime, memories running through my mind, It truly was just yesterday When you were here, you were mine, then you were gone. I’m trying to remember, Did I say I loved you anytime throughout our day’s routine? How was I supposed to know, It would be the last chance I would have to tell you anything. I can see the sparkle of your eyes, every time that I close mine, And I’m still living yesterday When you were here, you were mine, then you were gone I could hear the chords of summertime Memories running through my mind It truly was just yesterday When you were here, you were mine, then you were gone Oh you were here, you were mine, then you were gone.

I feel this song goes very deep from a writer's perspective because this could be one of two things: (1) It could be a break-up, parting ways song, or (2) it could be that someone passed away unexpectedly. Either way, it's powerful and emotionally driven, and I can see why this song would be difficult to write even if it's not a reality in your life. The melody is great because it's pretty AND somber all at once.....and it's pretty quiet and laid back through almost the entire thing. So on the occasional parts where you do sing and play louder in the song, it feels like an out-break of emotion before containing yourself again. Excellent job. I love this one, as well.
