Daddy Played Country Music on the Radio
This song was a Semi-Finalist in the 2007 UK Songwriting Contest.
Welcome to my page! I hope you like it here.
I’ve been writing songs on and off for the past 30 years. I tend to write country although I'm known to write songs that are more folk or rock. Sometimes when I sit down with a guitar I surprise myself with what comes out!
Story behind the song
Well, my dad never played country music on the radio..and I don't have any kids! I was reading an interview with a country singer and in the article she said, "Daddy played country music on the radio..." and to me, that was a song title. So here it is.
Lyrics
Daddy Played Country Music on the Radio
(Verse 1)
Daddy’s white knuckles gripped the steering wheel, and silence was all around
I was 6 years old and I’d just got told to quit my foolin’ around
I was feeling bad ‘cause he yelled at me, but then he turned the radio on
I saw him relax and breathe a sigh, then he started singing along
(Verse 2)
The sound of the fiddle and steel guitar soon made me feel all right
Then Daddy said, “I’m sorry, but you were making it hard to drive.”
When we got home he took me in and sat me on his knee
He turned the radio on, then sang me to sleep
(Chorus)
Daddy played country music on the radio
Oh I loved to hear those fiddles and guitars and especially the ol’ banjo
It filled me with peace that warmed me up from head to toe
When Daddy played country music on the radio
(Verse 3)
When Daddy played the radio he became a different man
Though he had a tough exterior there was a gentle side within
When he heard Hank and Waylon, I swear they made him cry
And it hit me too ‘cause I got like that when I heard Patsy Cline
(Chorus)
(Bridge)
Now I’ve got little ones of my own, then can run my patience thin
I turn on the music when it gets too much so that I won’t yell at them
I remember my daddy then…
(Chorus)
