Story behind the song
This is a version of a very old Song, maybe 300 years old. Most people are familiar with a version called "Streets of Laredo" But much older versions date Back to England and Ireland. I decided to bring it Back to England and Bring it up to date by making it the story of a dying Boy Ganster in the East End of London. Its basically a bit of Banjo drums in Reason and some simple programming in Logic. This is the first time I have mixed folk and Hip Hop styles so the purists in those genres will have to forgive my transgression
Lyrics
As I walked out on the streets of Whitechapel As I walked out on Whitechapel one day, I spied a poor Bad Boy wrapped in white linen, Wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay. "I can see by your outfit that you are a Player." The young man said to me as I boldly walked by. "Come an' sit down beside me an' hear my sad story. "I'm shot in the breast an' I know I must die." "I grew up surrounded by images of things I couldn't afford The Screamed at me from the TV they shouted at me from the Advertising Boards Designer Clothes Jewelry all Kinds of Luxury Goods They didn't come easily for a boy like me for a boy like me from my neighborhood But look at me now My car My Clothes My Jewelry You can't buy this sh** working the nightshift at KFC." "It was once in my Beemer we used to go cruising With All of My Posse we cruised down to Brick Lane We heard there was trouble in Hackney so we cruised up to Dalston Where I got shot in the Chest and am dying today" "So play the drum slowly, Play the Bass loudly, play my favourite tunes as you carry me along, take me down to the cemetary, lay the earth over me, I'm just a Bay Boy and I know I done wrong." "I wanted it all I wanted more so what did I do? I started hanging round with a different Crew a crew who knew how to extract a pound or two, And what did they do? Jacking cars dealing drugs I graduated from hoodie to East end Thug, Then things started to9 get real crazy I started using the sh** instead of selling it then I stopped a bullet>" "Then go write a letter to my grey-haired mother, "An' tell her the Bad Boy that she loved has gone. "But please not one word of the man who had killed me. "Don't mention his name and his name will pass on." When thus he had spoken, the hot sun was setting. The streets of Whitechapel grew cold as the clay. We took the young Bad Boy down to the Cemetary, And there stands his marker, we made, to this day. "We played the drum slowly, we played the Bass loudly, we played his favourite tunes as you carried him along, we took him down to the cemetary, We layed the earth over him, He's just a Bay Boy and I know he done wrong."
